Recovering Well Ė Chris Fullers Professional Squash Blog
Injuryís are every sportspersonís worst nightmare. Not only do they prevent you from competing and training and therefore improving but they also take away all earning potential making daily life suddenly very difficult.
Luckily I am now almost back to full fitness. My ankle injury has been somewhat of a rollercoaster with at first it looking broken then it healing well only to find out to few weeks later that it looked like an operation may be necessary. Luckily in the end it turned out that this wasnít needed though and I am back on court and doing most of my training and what a relief it is after sitting in physio rooms for 6 weeks!
Many people think that when injured a professional sportspersonís life must effectively just stop but thatís not the case. With all of the modern day sports science the old rest and relax approach seems to have gone out of the window and if anything I now spend more time training when Iím injured than when Iím not! This is because as you canít do anything particularly hard you need less rest and so you end up doing loads and loads of the low level training. For me this involved a lot of ankle mobility and stability exercises and also a lot of swimming to keep some level of fitness up. This then progressed to being able to slowly go onto a bike to then a cross trainer to then running and now as I mentioned being back on court and returning to my weights programmes.
I am now targeting between 2 to 3 weeks more progressive on court work before I take the plunge with my first match back. Itís funny how frustrating the training and matches can get in the heart of the season and yet how having been out for a while the buzz and excitement suddenly returns. After being injured you again start to appreciate being able to play and do what you love as your job. Letís hope itís a prolonged period of this buzz and excitement and letís hope for some good results.
