The 'Drop, Drive' exercise is one of the most basic ones of squash. It is easy to go through the motions and not actually practice anything useful at all. So why not build specific targets to hit into your drill depending on whether you are trying to attack or defend. You are not going to hit them every shot, unless you are James Willstrop, but the more you can pepper them the better!
Start the target practice under minimal pressure from an easy 'drop' feed and aim for the targets alternately. Ideally you are aiming to hit the targets but bouncing the ball in the green attacking zone or the red defending zone will still meet your tactical purpose. To change the rhythm of the exercise pick a sequence to follow (for example: 3 defending 1 attacking). If possible the partner can try to make the drops realistic to the sequence. (ie 3 difficult feeds, then one easier one).
In match play it is important play the right shot at the right time. By that I mean to attack or defend according to the quality of shot played by your opponent and whether you are at the ball in balance and with time. So finish with 'selected targets' where the drive hit is dependent on the quality of the drop. This is where your shot selection really comes into its own!
