Many players prefer to play the volley drop off their left foot on the backhand side. The reason is that from the T position is is quick to shuffle across to play a backhand volley drop. You don't often have time to turn across onto the right foot.
This left foot hitting position is a good balanced position to play a touch shot. It allows me to hold the T better and it doesn't allow me to take my racket too far back which is ideal when playing the volley drop. It is also easy to extend the follow through along the path I want the ball to travel.
