As you improve you’ll find much of the play in a squash match becomes down the backhand side, as usually this is the weaker side, and both players will play to their opponents weakness.

Therefore, opportunities to volley with your opponent behind you can be frequent on the backhand side.

The basic tactic is to hit a good tight length, and look to cut out your opponents reply, and drop it in short where they can’t easily cover. This is a very important part of your attacking arsenal!

A couple of key pointers for this shot.

1.       Your chest, as usual, faces the side wall.

2.       A solid platform to play the shot from is needed. (you’ll find right foot forward easier if you are learning.)

3.       The swing is compact, and the racket extends through to the intended target.

4.       A bit of cut will help you control the shot.

5.       The ball should be low on the front wall, and tight into the sidewall. Check  out the “Nick or Tight” clip for more detail on the width you should be hitting.
