Here are some basic ladder exercises to help with your general agility, balance and coordination which should transfer to your movement around the court. These are the building blocks for more advanced exercises that some pros use in their training.
It is better to perform these drills at the start of the session after the warm-up. Try to be light on your feet and get a rhythm to your steps. Push off from the balls of your feet rather than the toes.
You will find it easier leading with one foot than the other. So it is important to lead out with one leg but then lead back with the other leg. If you face the same direction in this drill the chassis will be leading one way on your favoured leg and the other on your non-favoured leg.
Keep the steps slow to start with until you have got the rhythm and then gradually increase the speed as your footwork improves. Once you are confident about the footwork it is important to keep your head up more and not look at your feet. In a match you will have to be aware of what your opponent is doing around you and they shouldn't be by your feet!
Master these exercises before you move on to more complicated ones!
