As Laurence moves into the front court to play his drive, he’s focusing hard to make sure that his drive is not obvious. He could play any number of shots from this position. To do this,
1. His movement is slightly to the side.
2. His preparation is early so he has all options open to him, and he can hold his opponent.
3. His preparation is back but quite low allowing him to feather in a drop, or whip his wrist through for the drive.
This takes extra energy to get in the right position, and extra concentration, as it would be easy to play a drive without giving much thought to it. But it is very much worth the investment of this effort, as perfect practice prevents poor performance.
Equally look at Adrian at the back. Each time he comes forward to the T as if to cover the front of the court, or cut off a loose shot on the volley. He could just walk along the back wall and return the drives with ease, but this would give him no benefit whatsoever. Again another great example of how to practice well, which if you copy will surely rub off into your match play.
