When you are facing a difficult volley return of serve you might need to respond defensively. They have hit a great serve and you are under some pressure. You have to deal with the challenge, defend the ball and play what might be considered a containing shot. One way of doing this is by lifting the ball high and wide cross-court. This is particularly effective from your backhand side when taking the ball before it hits the sidewall. The goal is to make your opponent to hit their next shot from the back of the court allowing you time to come to the 'T'. Aim to push the ball high on to the top third of the front wall with a short positive swing using your larger muscles of your upper body to develop the necessary power. Using a shorter swing will mak it easier for you to time your volley return, particularly when hitting the ball near the side wall. However as you now have a shorter swing with less racket momentum you will need to use the full height of the front wall to get your return deep.
