Did you know the 'T' is the centre of the court width but not the court length? The distance from the Short Line to the Tin is just under 5.5m whilst the distance from the Short Line to the Back Wall is approximately 4.25m. Usually players stand a racket length or so behind the Short Line when on the T so the distance to the front is even greater.
So why not stand in the middle of the court length I hear you ask Well, it is quicker to move forward for the ball than it is to turn and chase it behind you, so you can leave more distance to cover in front. Also the court is actually shorter than you think as the first metre or two by the Tin is dead space! By this I mean that as the ball always comes off the front wall back into the court the ball is 'rarely' hit within this area. So in fact the court length you have to cover in front is less.
So next time you go on court remember that the court as two metre short and psychologically you will be picking those drops up far easier!
