Here is a simple little drill for 2 players, or a player and a coach, mainly for a shot that is not often worked on, the cross court drop.
James plays a cross drop is aiming for the nick, which he often hits! He follows this with a cross-court or straight drive, for his partner or coach to boast. The exercise repeats and you'll notice how they swap sides.
One key point: the cross-court drop is the shot he's really working on. There's no thought here of hitting it a little higher to make the drives easier. The drive is not his focus and if he drives off the second bounce or has to pick up, so be it.
Another thing you will have noticed is that although he is predominantly hitting a cross court drop, James does give himself the flexibility to hit cross-court drive or straight drop when necessary. This provides an element of decision making to the drill, picking the right ball to play in short cross-court. It keeps his mind a little sharper, and he is varying his shots so as not to become predictable. Also he's not practicing a shot that wouldn't be a sensible in a match!
