Imagine I am in a match.... the ball is in the front backhand corner and I am in a bit of trouble. I don't have much time to get to the ball so I need to take a direct route as that is the quickest way. I find myself in position to play a cross-court drive as I have not had time to get round to the side of the ball.
With all my momentum coming this way it is tempting for me to over rotate and step through. This is bad for two reasons.
Firstly it is going to take the ball too wide on the front wall and then hit the side wall too early and come back towards the T where my opponent is waiting.
Secondly this over rotation here pulls me away from the T and leaves me facing the wrong direction. Now as the best way for me to get back to the T is forwards anything behind me, a boast or a cross court, is going to be really difficult for me to recover to.
Ideally, even when you are in trouble, you need to work hard to control your weight on your front foot and keep your balance. Use your left hand to stop the over rotation and push back out on the lead leg you came in on.
