When you are in a spot of bother in the back of the court your main aim should be to keep the ball in play. Secondly you should be trying buy to yourself time to get back on the 'T'. From this central position you will be giving yourself the best possible chance to stay in and regain control of the rally. You are still in a fair bit of trouble but at least you have a chance!
Bearing this in mind, hitting a defensive boast high and with little pace will help you achieve both of these goals. This high boast is less likely to hit the tin as well as giving you time to get to the 'T'. When the ball is particularly tight to the back wall, hitting the ball upwards with a shorter swing is the best way to get the ball to the front wall.
So keep it in play and live to fight another day!
