I mainly look to play this shot when I am cutting across the short line either from a loose cross-court or after I have played a good tight length into the forehand back corner, and I can anticipate it is going to come straight back. I try to get forward and hunt the volley.

There are two main technical points to playing the forehand volley drop. The first one being the spacing I have between myself, the racket and the ball. Not being too close to the ball and not having my elbow too close to my chest... trying to extend across the T line and use that space.

The second thing is not having too big a swing. Take the pace off the ball by shortening the swing down and just pushing through the ball. By taking the weight out of the ball it stays short up the court.

A key point for the execution of the shot is to make sure the ball is hitting the floor before the side wall. You are trying to run the ball in tight so the second bounce is towards the nick area. I am not looking to try and hit it into the nick directly. I am looking to fade it into the side wall and have the ball tight on the side wall when my opponent gets to it.

Depending on the position I find myself in across the half court line will determine how low I go to the tin. If I feel I have a good solid lunge across the middle then I will aim quite low and try to make it a good working ball. Where as if I am at full stretch and really struggling to get the ball off the side wall I will play with more of a margin of error and go a few inches higher than I would normally!
