There are two reasons to hit a cross-court shot very wide.
You can hit this cross-court to get yourself out of immediate trouble and give yourself more time to recover to a better position. You probably won't be able to get back on the T as the ball will come off the side wall into the centre of the court. However at least you are not stuck in the front corner!
Secondly, you may have seen your opponent come across for the volley and so choose to hit it wide to stop the interception. Depending on how far forward and across they have committed they may not get back in time to play the next ball!
