This is an extreme example of a common situation on the squash court – where you find your opponent directly between you and the ball. Alister’s is out of position and desperate to get to Adrian’s straight volley drive. They clash rather strongly and Alister requests a let because Adrian was in his way.
Here the referee has to look at several things. Firstly – was there interference? Yes just a little! Adrian is completely blocking Alister’s path.
Secondly, could Alister have reached the ball had Adrian not been there? Well this is the debatable point, but the referee in this instance thought no, and so no let was the decision given.
Alister’s effort resulted in a heavy contact with Adrian, and this may be considered too much contact. A warning would not have been far from the referee’s thoughts. On this occasion the referee saw that it was merely a strong effort to get to the ball, not deliberate or malicious and that it was not dangerous so no warning was forthcoming.
No harm done, he dusts himself off and gets on with it!
