Hi I'm Nick Matthew and I'm going to teach you a few secrets about the forehand volley drop.
The first thing I would teach is to take the ball at the highest point. A lot of the people wait for the ball to drop and let it come to them but I think you should go and meet it quite high up so that you can get the steepest angle down on the volley drop and you are less likely to hit the tin there.
I wouldn't worry about what foot you take it on. Basically whatever your footwork is at that time. It is more important to try to meet it at its highest point and get your body weight through the ball rather than leaning back! Really make sure the body is going forwards in an attacking manner as it is an attacking shot.
One thing I would say is that when practising once you feel like you have got the basic technique and you are pretty consistant with your volley drop, or with any shot for that matter, is to vary the feeds. If you are feeding yourself, or someone else is feeding you or if you are doing routines, you mix it up.
For example with the volley drop it may be one high, one fast, one crosscourt from the backhand on to the forehand! Keep mixing it up because obviously in a game situation you get loads of different variations. Sometimes you might need to play one close to your body so really mix the feeds so that you can respond to any envirinment. Unfortunately in matches the ball isn't always on your racket so you need to adjust
