Hereís a really simple, much underused pattern of play. Itís a good serve, forcing a weak cross-court from your opponent, which you volley straight and short. Nick Matthew is the best in the business at it.
Letís take a closer look. First itís a good tight serve hitting the side wall near the back of the service box. Now look at Nicks T position. Heís threatening to cut off anything straight thatís not on the wall which makes his opponent try to play the risky shot cross court.
Itís not good enough and Nick can cut it off. Hereís another major coaching point Ė look at the short back swing. No big swing needed as heís only hitting soft, and thereís no time for a big swing anyway. Finally look at the movement Ė itís a nice wide solid base and stretch across to the ball.
So after youíve hit a good serve, always look to punish a weak cross court return.
