When playing a straight drive from the rear court it is easy to fall into the comfort trap of slowly recovering to the 'T'.... and you get to about here! (some way behind the 'T')

From this position it is much more difficult to volley the ball. You have further to go to get it and you'll be approaching it front on. If you just let it drop to the side of your body the ball will be lower...not an easy volley to play!

From the 'T' position here you can approach the ball from the side, take the ball higher up which give the opponent less time, and also it is a much shorter distance so you will have more time to play a quality shot.

When you play a tight straight drive it actually gives you more time to get back to the 'T'. I prefer to use that time to get further forward so that I can hunt the loose ball that is coming my way.
