Your first shot of each rally is the most important as it will likely decide who will be in control.
We can return the ball straight and deep, cross-court or to the front. Be careful though, because your opponent should be on the T, and attacking the front can be dangerous if your opponent is not out of position. With this in mind, a straight deep return is the most common and the safest shot.
It is by no means easy to play though. You need to have a good volley be decisive about when you intend to take the ball, and move your feet into position well.
Standing close to the corner of the service box allows us to volley good serves that have hot or would have hit the sidewall. Your position should be slightly orientated to the side wall with racket ready to go!
Now we have your opponent where we want them – in trouble in the back corner!
