So here is a tip for you if you are struggling with your serve.

One of the difficulties you have when you are learning to serve is the tendency to want to throw the ball up high up in the air. There are two issues with this: one is you are throwing with your left (non-racket) hand which if it anything like mine is always a bit dodgy; and the second thing is when you do throw the ball up high you have a dropping and accelerating ball to time with the racket coming through.

One way of reducing the height of the ball when you serve is to just turn your hand upside down. As your hand is now not underneath the ball there is less tendency to throw the ball up too high. The ball will now come up slightly and just drop about 2 or 3 inches and the ball is hardly moving when you are timing your racket face into the shot.

Also because you are not now throwing the ball (and with your left hand!) you don't have so much variability. You are less likely to be throwing it in front or behind you. In fact what you are doing is putting you hand where you want to contact the ball and then just letting it go as the racket comes through.
