This is an excellent solo practice for developing a shorter swing for your volley drops. Feed backhands across your body to play a forehand volley drop. As the feed comes from the opposite side to the shot there is not enough time to draw the racket across and back for a more fuller swing. This means you have to use a shorter backswing in order to strike the ball out in front of you.

You can play the volley drop from either leg leading but with less time the tendency in a match would be to play off the outside leg as it is closer to the shot and required less hip rotation.

Play ten good shots on the forehand and then switch sides. The feeding this time is forehand across for the backhand volley drop.
