When you have created an opening on court to hit a dying length you have a tight rope to walk. Hit the ball too short or too soft and the opponent will cut across and intercept. Over hit it or play it with too much pace and they can just wait for the ball to come off the back.
It is a difficult balance to strike particularly when you have the point in your sights. Unfortunately there is no set answer as many situations are different but it you are aware of the balance of shot you need then you are more likely to come up with the right shot and consequently the point.
Think of it a bit like Baby Bear's porridge...not too soft or too hard... not too short or too long...but just right!
