Here’s a fantastic demonstration of using a completely different technique for the same shot, but in a different situation.
Whilst the play is tight on the back hand side Nick chips the ball probing for a perfect length. He has an open racket face and puts a little cut on the ball to help him control the length. Now he recognises an opening, he wants to generate maximum power so he closes his racket face close to impact to do this. It’s done with a subtle turn of his wrist.
Points to really note here are firstly the decision making process... he has identified the ball to attack, (it’s overhit in length and away from the side wall) and secondly that when he wants to generate power, he flattens or closes the racket face. However when accuracy is his be all and end all, he cuts the ball to allow him to put it on a sixpence.
