Tim uses his top spin drop as a variation to a drive from a very similar swing.
By severely closing his racket face and rolling the racket over the top of the ball he can take all the pace out of the shot and leave it near the front of the court for a drop, or if he keeps the racket face open or neutral, then the power in his swing is transferred to the ball and he can hit a deep drive. A high risk and reward shot that needs lots of practice and a little bravery.
Ordinarily you would be best advised to play a conventional drop or drive, but for variation and surprise factor it’s a great shot to have in the bag. One of its best advantages to you, is that once you have played it successfully once, your opponent will always feel uncomfortable and off balance when you shape for these shots.
