When the ball is high, it gives us the opportunity to put some outside spin on the volley. You’ll be able to control the ball better, much like putting cut on your drives and drops. The side spin will pull the ball back slightly into and along the wall, and help keep it nice and tight.
The swing on the forehand is a throwing action as usual, with the open racket face taking the racket around the far side of the ball, and this is where the side spin is imparted. You can liken it to a slice serve in tennis in some ways.
It’s a similar story on the backhand with the open racket face coming around the opposite side of the ball, giving it the spin.
On both sides, hit through the ball with the open racket face, much as for your drives, just on a different plane, rather than swinging your racket around the far side of the ball, as this won’t give you the crisp contact you are looking for.
It’s useful for deep shots, but can be particularly affective for keeping the ball tight while going short.
