At a recent Totalsquash camp Peter Nicol encouraged the players to do the following:
When you are on the T and you see the ball hit, just WAIT!
WAIT before you move!
Lets say I'm on the T and my opponent plays a boast from the back corner... what tends to happen is I see that boast go in and I move straight off towards the opposite front corner and get a bit too close, and a bit to soon, to the ball.
What you have almost always have is a fraction more time to see the boast and work out where the ball is going to go, an then move! For the more experienced player that happens in a split second. For the less experienced player that waiting on the T really helps to assess where the ball is going to be, where do they need to move to. Importantly when they arrive at the ball they have given themselves some space to play the appropriate shot.
As you become better and better at this then the time you need to wait on the T becomes less and less until it is almost inperceptable. However at the start you might need to slow yourself down, wait on the T and work out where you need to go!
