The backhand return of serve is probably the hardest shot in the game to play consistently well.

The best place to stand when receiving serve on the left hand side is within touching distance of the corner of the service box. This allows you to get anywhere quickly within one or two steps to hit the return.

When your opponent hits a good serve you can step forward and take the ball before it hits the side wall, or step back and across to hit the ball after the side wall. This takes the back corner out of play and gives you a good opportunity to hit a straight backhand volley. You can also go short or use the variation of cross-court.

When the opponent's serve hits the side wall too early you can just turn your body, let the ball come off the wall and play the volley. You might even be able to step back and play the ball off the bounce.

If the opponent's serve is aimed to hit the side wall too late, near the rear corner, you should intercept it on the volley before it gets there.

A good starting position will allow to cover all these options.
