Hi, I'm Steve Townsend and I'd like to give you a few tips on the backhand serve.

One of the major advantages of using the backhand serve is that we can play the ball closer to the middle. It helps us get to the T quicker and also helps to keep the ball closer to the side wall for longer.

There are three tips I want to give you on how to hit a good backhand serve. The first is that I want you to throw the ball with the left hand underneath your right so that as you swing your left hand can come out of the way.

It is out of the way of the swing and you can use it to help you balance. Secondly two reasons we want to be as close to the T as possible.

The first reason why is an obvious one..we want to get to the T straight after we have hit the shot so that we can command the centre of the court.

When we are hitting our backhand serve we are going to aim further over to the left side of the front wall. This is going to bring the ball in on a shallower angle to the side wall.

The advantage of this is that the ball stays closer to the side wall for longer where it is going to be more difficult for our opponents to hit the ball.

The third tip that I want to give you is when you strike the ball you want a little bit of cut on the ball which will help us to control the height and the length and also to follow through and extend through the line you want the ball to go.

So now you should have all the information you need to hit a great backhand serve. There are three things to take away.....firstly throw the ball underneath your racket arm...secondly get as close to the centre of the court as you can when you step out to serve...and thirdly put a little bit of cut on the ball and extend through the line you want the ball to travel on.
